Original Universe or Alternate Universe? Original Universe
Personality:
On the surface, John seems like a great guy. He's charming and affable enough, the kind of guy who has a wide circle of people who know him, who makes friends and draws lovers easily. He has a sharp wit, a dry sense of humor, an extensive vocabulary of vulgarities, and he can be a lot of fun to be around or befriend. He's a compassionate man, despite his cynicism about the way the world works; he can't stand to see innocent people taken advantage of or harmed, which is how he gets into a lot of the messes he gets into. He's a loyal friend and doting lover--in his own way, sometimes questionably so, but he generally means well. He's a hedonist and adrenaline addict, so he's always on the lookout for ways to indulge or new rushes.
For all his bad-boy charm and "that's a guy I'd love to have a drink with" ways, though, beneath the surface he's harder, darker. He's faced powerful evil with little fear. He's cursed people--they generally had it coming, but still. He can be manipulative and he isn't entirely above using people, even the ones he likes, to further his own ends. He's a schemer, a con man, a man always ready to seize any advantage. When he makes up his mind that he wants something, he stops at nothing to get it. He's walked into Hell and bested the most powerful demons there. He tends to see himself as a constant thorn in the side of anything he sees as evil--and that definition shifts a lot. When he was young he put all his fears, doubts, and insecurities into a box and buried them, to make himself more powerful, so he's cocky as hell.
And God help anyone who crosses him. John Constantine is a self-described "nasty piece of work". He's ruined people for slights, he's tormented people to avenge other people. He is especially vengeful when it comes to making someone pay for harming or killing someone he cared about; it's something that happens a lot in his life, that people who associate with him meet bad ends, so his usual how dare you fire gets the gasoline of guilt thrown on it. For example: at the canon point where I'm taking him from, he's just punished another magician who murdered a former lover of his. He tracked the guy down, fed him a massive dose of LSD, and then locked him in the morgue drawer with the rotting corpse of his victim to drive him mad.
But he's generally a good guy to have on your side. He's shrewd, he's tireless in a fight no matter how long it takes to end things to his liking, there's a reasonably good heart in there somewhere, and he's entertaining. Just don't betray him, and keep in mind you could die a terrible death just for befriending him, and you'll probably get along just fine.
Background: John Constantine's biography @ Hellblazer wiki; stop just before "A US Odyssey". Also: John Constantine timeline @ Hellblazer wiki; through 1998 (1999 is not listed for some reason).
Other Notables: Back home, John was a very powerful and skilled occult magician who most notably could harness good luck for his own use. He's going to be pretty annoyed to discover that's all been nerfed. He may need a while to get over it, as much for the blow to his ego as for the loss of his actual power.
